I stayed at the glorious Rosewood hotel cradled in the heart of downtown San Miguel de Allunde in Mexico earlier this year for a friends wedding. I had never been to Mexico before and had no idea what to expect, but wow, was I blown away by the traditional and natural beauty of this small town. The richness of history and tradition is evident in every detail of it which makes it almost impossible to not immediately fall in love with this magical city in central Mexico.
Later discovering that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Mexico’s oldest most inspired old town came as no surprise. It’s radiance of colour, texture and culture create an vibrant energy hard to explain.
The hotel is built like the rest of the town in a timeless Spanish colonial style, the furniture is an interesting mix of mexican craftsmanship and the pool, restaurants, bars and rooftop are all wonderful experiences of their own.
San Miguel at Sunset is a sight to behold, because of the light and changing colors of the foothills of the Sierra Madre, sunrises and sunsets are spectacuarly dramatic. If you have the chance to stay or visit this mesmerising hotel the drinks or dinner on the Rosewood terrace are an absolute must!!
The shops in San Miguel de Allende are a mix of enchanted art colonies and galleries, souvenir shops, modern boutiques, and old stores such as the pharmacy (Botica De Santa Teresita) that has doled out inexpensive homeopathic remedies for centuries.
The historic centre of San Miguel encompasses 24 blocks of narrow cobblestone streets, alleys, and paths that are easily accessible to walk by foot and to explore all it has to offer. I strongly suggest a visit!
